Genealogy Brick Walls

Personal Brick Wall.

There are two kinds of genealogy brick walls.  One is a personal brick wall the other is a system-wide wall.

The personal wall is a temporary barrier experienced by a single researcher or a small group of researchers. The personal brick wall will eventually be penetrated after additional research.

System-wide Brick Wall.

The system-wide brick wall may be a permanent barrier.  It is a barrier that has been experienced by many researchers over a long period of time. The needed records, if they ever existed, have been permanently lost and will probably never be recovered.

Only biological DNA evidence can bridge the gap of the system-wide brick wall. DNA can  reach over the missing records to the records on the other side of the wall.

Naming Brick Walls

"CLAN: a group of people regarded* as being descended from a common ancestor".  That is one of the definitions for CLAN that I am using from dictionary.com. Every person regarded* as descended from a particular brick wall is in the same clan..

*Note the definition says "regarded". It does not say "proven".

A clan could be named for the ancestor immediately at the brick wall. since he is the earliest known ancestor. However, if the earliest ancestor is a common name such as Thomas or William his name will not be a very useful label.  I prefer to use a name that is more distinctive and easier to remember.

For example, instead of the Thomas Gassaway clan, I label that clan the "Col. Nicholas Gassaway Clan".

Col. Nicholas is Thomas's son. Col. Nicholas Gassaway was a rich, powerful, and famous Gassaway that all researchers have heard of.

Another clan, also with a Thomas as the earliest known ancestor, I call the Gazaway-Waggoner Clan. William Gazaway is Thomas's son.  William married Mary Polly Waggoner.

A clan, with John as the earliest known ancestor, I call the "Gasaway-Boatright Clan".  Thomas Gasaway is the son of John and he married Nancy Boatright.

My own Gazaway (Gasway) clan has two separate sub-clans, each with it's own brick wall. We know both are the same clan because my DNA matches Dwight Gasway's DNA. I call my clan the Grafton-Aggripa Gasway Clan. Grafton and Agrippa are unusual names and are good memory aids. Grafton Gazaway is in my sub-clan and Agrippa Gasway is in Dwights sub clan.

There are many African-American Gasaway Clans.

Clan Identity

Based On Evidence

Biologic Gasway Clan.

A person is "proven" a member of a biologic clan if his or her DNA matches the DNA of another member of the clan. (See "What is a DNA Match"). There is unlikely to be a non-parental event, such as adoption or adultery breaking that genetic chain.

Paper Gasway Clan.

A person is a member of a "paper" Gazaway clan if his or her paper trail shows he or she share a common ancestor.

Cultural Gassaway Clan

One could NOT be genetically related, yet do to sharing a houshold, neighborhod, and culture with other members of a clan, they are members of that Gazaway cultural clan.

The Gasaway-Boatright Brick wall

I have found no evidence or claim that this Thomas Gasaway is related to Thomas Gaswai 1600 London. If you are a male Ga[s,z] away,  You can help determine the relationships.  If your DNA matches that of James Kimbell Gazzaway, we may be able to prove if this Thomas is related to Thomas Gaswai and Col Nicholas Gassaway of England.

The grandfather of Thomas Gasaway, b 1786, is the 'brick wall" of this Gasaway-Boatright line.  Thomas 's father and mother are known.  But the grandfather is not know.

A "clan" is defined as a group of individuals who are bel.ieved to be descended from a common ancestor.

A person is considered a member of a particular clan if he can trace his chain of parentage generation by generation until it reaches the common ancestor

Mary Polly Waggoner Clan

Six currently living descendants of Waggoner and Gazaway have matching DNA. None match Grafton/Agripa or Col. Nicholas.*

Col Nicholas Gassaway Clan

*Earliest known ancestor is Thomas Gaswai 1600 London. Only one DNA sample is available from a person with a paper trail to Col. Nicholas.

Grafton/Agripa Gasway Clan

No paper record show Grafton Gazaway and Agripa Gasway to be related, but proven by DNA to be of the same clan. The DNA does not match the samples from the clans mentioned above.

Nancy Boatright Clan

Earliest suspected ancestor is John Gasaway born about 1757 possibly Scotland, died about 1812.  No DNA available.

William Gazaway

Mary Polly Waggoner

Brick Wall

Various "clans" of Gazaways are separated from each other by brick walls.

Some brick walls are only barriers to be crossed with additional research. Some barriers can only be broken by biological (DNA) research because paper records no longer exist.

I call this wall the "Mary Polly Waggoner Brick Wall" because Wagooner is easier to remember than Thomas. The real brick wall is the father of Thomas Gazaway. Thomas was born 1753.

Six currently living descendants of Waggoner and Gazaway have matching DNA.

All six are biochemically "proven" to have a common ancestor, and all six have a paper trail leading to Mary Polly Waggoner.

Three other Gazaways have DNA lab results that show they are not related to the Mary Polly Waggoner Brick Wall.

One of those is Jimmy Kimbell Gazzaway who has an extensive paper trail to the Col. Nicholas Gassaway Brick Wall. Jimmy Kimbell Gazzaway's DNA "proves" that he is not biologically related to Polly Waggoner. Jimmy's DNA also shows he is not related to the William Gazaway--Mary Mae Powell Brick Wall or to the Agrippa Gazaway Brick Wall.

Mary Mae Powell Brick Wall and the Agrippa Gazaway Brick Wall are biologically related, but there is no connecting paper trail. Agrippa Gazaway's DNA is represented by Dwight Gazway and Mary Powell by Clif Gazaway.

NOTE: Aparently the FREE DNA testing by smgf.org is no longer available. I currently have testing done at dnaancestry.com for $100.00. However I may be willing to pay for one more participant. Are you interested?
